Chapter twenty

Desperate Times For The Resistance

Countless Resistance soldiers had been pouring in over the last two days. The Sato Installation was beyond capacity but more kept coming in. Luckily, there wasn’t any known dangers in the forests that surrounded the encampment and they were able to erect some tents in there for added room.

All nine commanders were called to be in the command tent. Veronica couldn’t answer that call just yet. Her mind wasn’t focused enough for her to be in council right now. Thoughts of her husband’s whereabouts were compounded with the sight that laid inside the tent before her.

Five rows of cots lined the interior of the medical tent. All of the cots were filled with injured or dying soldiers. Dozens of medical personnel rushed between the cots. IVs sat like vultures perched on their metallic trees, watching over the soldiers they were tasked to keep alive but still waiting for that final breath.

“Look at all of these soldiers in pain. How are we going to fight Death Saber now?” Veronica asked to herself.

“As we always do. With a well-coordinated attack,” Chazz said as he approached from behind her.

“I don’t think we have enough to combat their numbers. Not while our forces look like this,” she said with despair in her voice.

“Are you assuming that we don’t stand a chance anymore?”

She turned around to face him. “We’ve never fought against their full force. And it appears that is the fight that we are about to get into.”

“They’ve never fought against ours, either.”

“That’s just it.” She looked back inside the tent as a doctor wrapped up a soldier’s bloody leg. “We aren’t at full force.”

“I don’t think that’s what you’re really worried about,” Chazz said.

Veronica turned back to face Chazz who had an odd-looking smile on his face. She tilted her head with her eyebrows furrowed. Chazz repeatedly raised his eyebrows in a suggestive manor. Veronica shook her head with a chuckle as she playfully shoved him, the tension fading just a bit.

“Of course I’m worried about him. Even when we were stationed at separate bases, I always knew that he was safe. That he was probably off playing hero for some poor person or stray hound. Now, I’m not so sure,” she said desperately.

“Do you remember when we fought Death Saber for the second time in Dagger’s Edge before forming the Resistance? You jumped off a hut towards a robot,” Chazz began laughing. “You had missed so completely and landed in a pile of hay.”

“What does that have to do with anything right now?”

“I couldn’t stop laughing and nearly got killed myself,” Chazz said laughing even harder. Veronica punched him in his arm. He winced a bit and pulled his arm away still laughing. “What I’m meaning is, you always seem to doubt yourself just before you do what you say you can’t.”

“What am I saying that I can’t do right now?” Veronica asked.

“If you have to ask, you’re not looking inside yourself hard enough,” Chazz said as he walked away.
