Vox
Vox waited. He listened.
His opponent moved silently, not disturbing the sand of the arena floor.
The rush of air was his only warning. Vox ducked and moved quickly, rolling away.
A foot hit him solidly in the back and pinned him to the ground. âYou waste too much time on unnecessary maneuvers.â
Vox picked himself up from the floor. Blindfold still secure, he turned to face Mylomon. âYes, but it would have looked cool if I succeeded.â
Mylomon snorted. âThis preoccupation with looking cool will get you killed.â
A female gasped.
His female.
Vox tore off the blindfold. Carrie stood with her arms folded across her chest. âWhat are you doing? Is that a sword? Why are you blindfolded?â
âTraining, my mate,â Vox said, using his most soothing tone of voice.
âBut thatâs sword. And you couldnât see him swinging it at you.â
âIt is only a dull edge,â Mylomon said, holding out the sword for her to inspect.
That did not help.
She backed away like it was a viper. âYouâre crazy. What if you hurt yourself?â
With that dull edge weapon? Hardly. âFear not. Mahdfel heal quickly.â
âQuickly? Thatâs why you got that big scar on your face? Because you heal too fast to be seriously hurt?â
Vox couldnât help his grin. His mate was clever. His mate had a keen eye. âYou told me you like my scar?â
Carrie back away, eyes wide at his seductive tone. âI, uh, thisââ
She shoved grease stained paper at him.
âMercy wore down the warlord,â he said, reading the invitation. âWe shall attend.â
âDaisy helped me pick out a dress,â she said.
âOf course she did,â Mylomon grumbled. âMy mate will insist I attend?â
âPretty positive she said something about your formal uniform.â
Mylomon grunted. Not even Vox could interpret that.
âAre we finished?â Vox asked.
Another grunt. Vox took it to be affirmative.
âAnd you, mate?â he asked, pulling his mate to him. âDo you like a warrior in formal uniform?â
She wiggled in his grasp but did not seem to mind the sweat or the sand clinging to his bare chest. âI think this is pretty good, honestly.â
How fortunate was he?
