Perspectives on Cultural and Linguistic Diversity

Ms. Tark’s experiences with issues surrounding cultural and linguistic diversity have primarily concentrated on finding acceptance of her son’s multilingualism, an issue that arose in the context of early intervention. From the time David was a baby, she has spoken to him only in Spanish (her first language) during the day; when her husband returns in the evenings, he speaks to David in English. While his father’s first language is Tagalog, and their son has been exposed to Tagalog through interactions with his paternal grandparents, Mr. Tark believes that English will be far more useful for him. Ms. Tark notes that although David was language delayed when young, he had mastered numerous sight words by age three and could respond to signing in Spanish or English.
