Around 2009, workers at pig farms observed what appeared to be a foam coating, a few feet thick, on the top of these feces lakes. Methane and other gases, instead of floating into the respiratory systems of unsuspecting workers, would instead get trapped under the foam. This created a huge risk if someone, say a casual smoker, were to put an open flame near these pits. Which happens. A lot. Hell, if you worked on a farm that smelled like a combination of sewer and three-day-old battlefield, you’d find ways to distract your sense of smell, too, we suppose. Just since 2009, there have been over thirty explosions around such sites, which have led to injured workers, exploding barns, and animals killed. In one incident like this, in Iowa, a methane blast killed 1,500 pigs. So you get an idea of how deadly and toxic these gases can be.
