Bunny

Shackleton, Nov.19

For some reason I had thought that the previous message indicating that Bunny had reached South Ice meant that his whole team had arrived. I didn’t realise that the main group wouldn’t actually be leaving Shackleton until 24th November which was almost a week away. But the most surprising point to me was Bunny’s lack of appreciation of the momentum we were getting behind our southern tractor journey, as indicated by his suggestion that we might prefer to put the final depot at 600 miles instead of 700 miles. As we were only 250 miles from D700, I considered our arrival there in some force was a foregone conclusion. It was what would happen beyond D700 that occupied my thoughts and plans.

However the most amazing message was from the Ross Sea Committee, relayed to me by John Claydon, our pilot.

Helm rang saying following the Committee meeting Monday it appears greatly increased public interest in expedition and stocks particularly high. Committee interested in your prospects reaching Pole and whether you have considered this. If you are prepared to go for Pole Committee will give you every encouragement and full support following formal approval from London. If you intend to proceed Helm requests you seek Committee approval for the venture following which they will get OK from London. Could you wire Helm re this on same day as you send ‘Times’ despatch from D480. Good work.
