Chapter Thirteen

Rhona

The remainder of the journey to search for the dark prism had been uneventful, and Rhona and Quil now stood in front of the Crimson Forest. The moment she looked toward the trees, she knew she’d made a mistake. She’d left Perin alone with two strangers—a bat and a creature that wasn’t quite a woman, who had already tried to kill him. Perin was good with a sword, but those skills would be dimmed if his condition worsened on the way back.

“He’ll be fine,” Quil said. It was only the third time he’d spoken to her on the way, and he’d said the same thing every time.

“I don’t think you can predict the future, Quil.” That was one thing she knew for sure—the future was an unpredictable one.

“No, I can’t, but once he gets to Lana, she’ll help him. I do know that.” He held up a finger. “And don’t ask ‘what if he doesn’t make it.’”

She thought that maybe she shouldn’t have been so hard on Perin, that she shouldn’t have taken it out on him with the sword.

The letter and Belen being her father… Finding out about those things had caused her to not think straight. Belen was the root of everything wrong—not Perin.

Rhona looked from Quil’s face, then back to the trees. The entrance presented a dark aura, even though the day was still colored in brightness. Limbs of crimson trees folded and swirled around each other, creating a barrier of sorts. There were tiny holes that she could barely see through, and an opaque darkness stared back. A metallic odor wafted in their direction, coming from within. Outside it, birds and insects made their usual noises, but from inside, she couldn’t detect any sounds. Yet.

“Do you happen to have any candles with you?” Rhona didn’t have any in her pack.

“No, but I have a solution that Lana made with fireflies and fairy wings.” He pulled out two glass tubes and handed her one.

She took the glass filled with pale blue fluid, her fingers brushing his, and a shiver ran up her spine. It could have been from his touch, or the thought of going into the forest, or maybe a mixture of both.

They shook their glasses, and the blue color became brighter, giving off the perfect amount of glow.

Drawing out her sword, Rhona swung it against one of the branches to make way, but it didn’t pass through. Something howled, akin to a person’s scream causing her to flinch. It came from the branch, as if she’d wounded the tree.

“Did you hear that?” she asked.

“Yep.” Quil didn’t seem frightened by it, but he had been near here before.

At the base of the entrance sat a large opening—she didn’t know if either one of them could fit through, but she would try.

“Let me crawl underneath,” Quil said, pressing forward. Somehow, even with his broad shoulders, he shimmied his way in. Rhona blinked for a moment, and he shot a hand out toward her, wiggling his fingertips.

She
