Chapter 30
Simon took a triumphant step into the opened elevator and turned to Shea with a smile. âWell, that went well.â
âYouâre such an asshole!â Shea swung a punch at his arm. The hit tweaked her wrist, and it throbbed as she tucked it beneath her armpit. She turned away from him, too angry to even look at his face.
âWhoa, what the hellâs the matter?â Simon asked, bewildered but unfazed by the sudden outburst.
âWhat the hell is wrong with you?â Shea yelled. Her face flushed hot as she shoved him against the wall. âYou didnât think to maybe, oh I donât know, ask me about all of this before dragging me along as fucking leverage in this idea of yours?â
Simon stammered and blinked, confused. âIâm sorry, I didnât thinkââ
âNo, Simon, you didnât think!â
She crossed her arms and faced the closed doors, burning in her anger as they descended to the bottom floor. She couldnât begin to explain to him the risk she would take treating an unstable old man with violent tendencies, or how betrayed she felt by his failure to even discuss his plan with her.
âI really am sorry,â Simon said, his voice softening. âI donât understand why youâre so mad, though. I was afraid youâd say no, but to be honest I figured youâd be happy to help.â
âI am happy to help.â Shea measured her words, careful to not let her frustration get the better of her. âBut you couldâve asked me. I wouldâve agreed. Keeping me in the dark out of fear that Iâd say no? Using me like that, youâre no better than your mother.â Shea swallowed the ire rising in her throat. âIt shows you donât trust me, and itâs a slap in the face.â
The two stood together in the silence of the elevator until it came to a stop on the ground floor. When the doors parted, Shea felt the weight of Simonâs arm lay across her shoulders. He pulled her close against his side as they stepped off into the lobby together.
âI can be a dick sometimes, I know. And Iâm sorry. But let me make it up to you.â His voice was kind, and when she looked up at him he was smiling down at her. âLet me get you a brewâmy treat.â

Shea leered at the tall mug of warm, dark brown liquid resting on the tilted old wooden bar table. She leaned against the stool beneath her and could smell the earthy, sweet scent of it. By the looks of it, the cafe owner had merely gone outside and scooped up a mug full of filthy street water and served it directly to his patrons. She lifted the glass to her eyes to test if she could see through the liquid, feeling dismayed when she discovered that she couldnât.
âSimon, what the shit is this?â When she turned, she saw that he was already half finished with his own, having downed the beverage in three mouthfuls. He smiled at her.
âI still canât believe youâve never had brew.
