The car came for her promptly at nine-thirty, and drove her to Central Park West. There was little traffic at that hour on a Friday night, and it took fifteen minutes to head west and cross the park. The doorman buzzed Benâs apartment, and after speaking to Ben, sent her up immediately. Ben was waiting for her in the doorway in a black turtleneck sweater and black jeans and short black Hermès boots, and he was impeccably groomed. Without a word, he pulled her into his arms, held her tightly, took her breath away when he kissed her, and then led her into his elegant, beautifully decorated apartment and closed the door behind her. He looked like a man she had just saved from drowning, and she was glad she had come. She knew that others who didnât know him might say it was a booty call, but she knew better now. They were sharing the little time he had for himself before he left on an important mission. What he did was of world importance, not just an ordinary job like hers, or those of other men she knew. She felt very small when she was with him. He was an enormous persona, and he had invited her into his private world, which made her feel very special. She had never felt that way before with any man. Ben made her feel like a princess, a princess he hadnât called or texted all week. She tried to remind herself to keep her feet on the ground, and forgot instantly.
Ben had a bottle of Dom Pérignon champagne chilling for her and poured her a glass as soon as she took her coat off. She had worn gray slacks and a new white cashmere sweater, with her long blond hair straight down her back. She didnât have to look serious and medical for him, and the fact that she was a highly skilled surgeon was irrelevant in his world. No one knew her name. The entire world, and every head of state, knew who he was. And the twenty-five-year age gap between them added to his gravitas and her respect for him. He knew so much more about life, the world, and delicate political situations she could only guess at.
As he had promised, he had everything done and put away when Morgan arrived. He turned his full attention on her, sat down on the couch next to her, and drank the champagne with her. She felt its effect with the second glass, as he kissed her, and slowly undressed her, and they were in his bed minutes later, soaring to heights only he was able to bring her to. She felt like a novice at everything when she was with Ben. He was so worldly and so wise and so sophisticated, and so tender and loving. Morgan felt as though he pulled her into heaven with him, after having been in hell all week without any word from him. Now she was back in the magic world he shared with her when she was with him.
