These actions support BCH’s goals, but perhaps the most critical action is its focus on expanding the definition of preventable harm, not just to patients but also to staff. By including and tracking the reduction of preventable harm to its workers, BCH fosters a caring environment for both those receiving the care and those giving it. By including the safety of their staff in the OTH of achieving zero preventable harm, all members become more willing participants in reducing the role that human ego plays in the process. By creating a culture in which employees are encouraged to report mistakes, to learn and improve, BCH ensures that its employees’ good intentions are aligned with practices that reduce preventable harm. In many organizations, it’s not natural to self-report your mistakes, much less encouraged, yet that is one of the tenets that has made BCH unstoppable. Employees are encouraged and even rewarded for acknowledging their mistakes; they receive regular training and professional development to make mistakes even rarer. In this way, BCH shows that it cares for its employees just as much as it cares for its patients. When you conduct all-hands meetings five days a week and spend millions more training every single person on your staff on harm prevention, you are both connecting with individuals and giving them the tools to achieve a visionary goal. BCH hasn’t yet eliminated preventable harm completely, but it has dramatically reduced it.
As the BCH story shows, achievement is rarely contained within any one team, department, or company. In addition, fear of the unknown is a reality for every team with high aspirations. It’s not something to be avoided. Indeed, the best leaders turn fear on its head by helping their teams find personal meaning in the goal, by assuming that the team has what it takes to succeed (and providing what’s missing if necessary), by providing constructive feedback and assessments as the team makes progress (or goes off track), and by showing all members that they are valued and appreciated for their contributions. As you do this, you will begin to cultivate the next element that unstoppable teams need: respect.
