Chapter 22
Ghalâyat roared again and strode forward, holding his massive sword low to the side with one hand. With his teeth bared, and murderous rage pouring through his eyes, the Zhâvan were afraid for their safety and cleared a lane to the invaders.
Cadel had never seen anything comparable to Ghalâyat. The giant carried himself like a seasoned warrior and his athletic movements were coordinated, uninhibited by his colossal frame. Cadel had heard rumors of the giant in the Niphâal Swamps, but like the stories of mythical creatures in the Mavo Lakes to the north, he considered them nothing more than folklore. Even with Cadelâs massive size, Ghalâyat still dwarfed him. Fighting the seven-and-a-half-foot-tall Teâkash was enough of a unique challenge. At ten feet and fashioned from pure, rage-empowered muscle, Ghalâyat would be a foe beyond anything the men had ever faced.
As the giant drew near, Cadel readied himself, but before he could move, Malosi charged past him with two Tamayans and Hajime by his side. Hajimeâs gold-trimmed, white Baksa armor reflected the sunset as he raised his shortsword in an ill-fated move of foolish bravery.
Malosi saw Ghalâyatâs sword sweeping through their air like a scythe, but Kaipo was not so fortunate. The bladeâs crescent tip effortlessly gashed the Tamayanâs chest. He was left standing with a distant look of helpless shock while the conflict unfolded around him as his blood soaked the ground at his feet.
As Ghalâyat followed through on his swing, Hajime tried lunging at the giantâs exposed midsection, but failed to anticipate the manâs powerful athleticism. Ghalâyat kicked out with a violent strike to Hajimeâs chest with his heel, shattering his sternum as he flew back to the ground, gasping for breaths that would never again fill his lungs in a slow suffocation.
Ghalâyat swung at Malosi again but missed as the agile Tamayan dove and rolled away. Patient with his approach, he continued looking for an opening to attack the giant. While Ghalâyat faced Malosi, Olaga leaped forward, slashing down at the giantâs back. The brave effort was the last thing he ever did among the living.
While he was still airborne, Ghalâyat whipped around and swung up with his massive sword. The crescent tip pierced Olaga through the abdomen, skewering him to the blade. Ghalâyat gripped the sword with his two powerful hands and lifted the gasping Tamayan over his head while turning to face Malosi with a malicious grin. A ferocious roar erupted from his throat as he swung the sword down to the ground and the bladeâs crescent tip burst through Olaga.
Down on a knee, Ghalâyat glared at Malosi, whose eyes were wide from shock at the sadistic brutality. His hesitation was his fatal downfall. In an impossibly fast three-step, spinning attack, Ghalâyat jerked his blade from the ground, stepped across Olagaâs corpse, and slashed sideways, severing Malosiâs head from his body.
The Zhâvan continued their relentless attack on the rest of the dwindling contingent while Ghalâyat unleashed devastation. Cadelâs focus was diverted, but he saw enough glimpses of the giantâs savage display to gauge the manâs power and skill.
