Blackbeard was hunted down and killed by the English navy in 1718. Most of the 25,000 pirates operating in the Caribbean had to be hunted down and killed or hanged by 1725.

The British government did encourage privateers during the War of the Spanish Succession from 1702 to 1713 by licensing the pirates as part of their war against Spain and France. Spain demanded that England revoke all privateer licensing and enforced an end to English piracy with the Royal Navy as a provision of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 that ended the war. England agreed to end piracy by its subjects because of the great debt that the war caused and because the pirates were not sending the king’s share of prize money to England except for a small pittance of the seized wealth. Piracy had become a liability to England and it needed to be stamped out. At first pirates were given the opportunity to be given amnesty by the British government if they turned themselves in and swore to never be involved in piracy again. Some pirates did get out when given this option. Most pirates loved the exciting lifestyle of a buccaneer too much to quit. After 1718, it was clear that the royal Navy would have to enter an intensive campaign to end piracy by its subjects. Between 1718 and 1724, the royal navy hunted down and killed thousands of pirates including Blackbeard in bloody ship battles. Close to 600 pirates were hanged by the Royal Navy during this time as well. By 1725, the Age of Piracy was over with. Pirates still came and went over the next 100 years, but they never lasted long like piracy did under the umbrella of the English government from 1568 until 1714.
