Sexting. When students send digital sexual content (video, photos, suggestive or provocative messages), such behavior is commonly referred to as sexting. Sexting may be done intentionally and outside bullying aggression by individuals, or it may be done as a means to bully and to cause harm to another person.

Sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is not synonymous with bullying. One may be sexually harassed without being bullied, as sexual harassment consists of unwanted and unwelcome sexual behavior directed toward a person in a manner that interferes with that person’s rights. If adults or older students use power, size, or age as a means to intimidate another student into sexual activity, then the student has been the victim of both sexual harassment and bullying.

Assault. Students who encounter bullying may be verbally or physically assaulted. Assaultive behavior is extreme and may involve legal ramifications in addition to school consequences.

Place and opportunity. Bullying may occur anywhere; however, it often occurs in common places where there is less supervision and structure, such as restrooms, hallways, playgrounds, bus stops, and cafeterias. For this reason, it is essential to ensure adult supervision and ongoing monitoring of these areas throughout the school day.

District and school response. Since a variety of behaviors are often mistakenly called bullying, and because actual bullying can be very serious, it is essential that administrators have a clear definition of bullying, a plan for investigating and responding to bullying, and policies and procedures to guide these actions.Having these tools in place allows the school leader to be responsive and provides expectations for both students and adults. School principals should become aware of their individual state laws regarding bullying.
