1. Although Nathan states his understanding of the slave trade was very abstract, I do not imply his schools in the DRC did not teach this part of history. If Nathan did not know important facts, it might be because he was not paying attention or did not learn in a meaningful way.

2. Nathan has recently learned about Japanese American internment campus during WWII in the U.S. which is probably why he uses this term.

3. I acknowledge that English is actually Nathan’s third language, but in the field of language acquisition, the language one is in the process of acquiring is usually referred to as the L2 or second language.
