Julian smiled at Eva as she took the sleeping pill and settled back into the bed.

“Rest well,” he said.

“Good night, Dad. See you in the morning.”

He closed the door softly and found Tyler standing outside, already on guard.

“Tyler.”

“How’d it go?” The frown on Tyler’s face made it clear he was skeptical about what had transpired, but he still stood straight and obedient.

Julian sighed. Content. “Much better than I could have hoped. I’d call it a miracle if I believed in such things.”

“She still has no memory?”

“None whatsoever. And the doctor said there’s a good chance she won’t ever get it back.”

“How sure is he?”

“Enough to fill me with hope. But I want you to stay here tonight.”

“Of course.” Tyler’s jaw twitched.

“Is there something you’d like to say to me?”

“It’s just…Sir, I know what having Eva back means to you, but do you really think it’s a good idea?”

Julian looked at the floor in thought. “My daughter was lost to me, and now I have the opportunity to have her back again. She’s one of the most extraordinary woman I’ve ever known and if I get a second chance with her, I’m going to take it.”

“I agree, sir. Her skills have always been above and beyond the others, but is it worth the risk?”

“Having her back again? Yes. But Tyler”—Julian moved closer to his guard—“if she runs again, shoot her. And this time, make sure she stays dead.”

“Sir.”

“Spit it out.”

“I don’t understand how she could have survived.”

“Frankly, neither do I. I thought I sent three competent men out to hunt her down, and yet, she still got away.”

“That’s what I mean. She got away.”

“Didn’t I tell you not to take her death for granted? She survived because she’s better than all of you put together.”

“Yes, sir. But what if she’s faking it?”

“Faking what?”

“Her memory loss.”

“To what end? If she wanted to infiltrate us, she didn’t have to turn on us in the first place. Besides, the doctor ran tests.”

“You can trust Dr. Smith?”

“He’s one of us. So is the nurse on duty. I called them in for this. Anything goes wrong, we’ve got our bases covered.”

“Then why am I here?”

“I don’t want anyone else entering that room. I don’t want any of those fanatics she got mixed up with getting to her again. All those lies about God and his order that they filled her head with have been wiped clean, and we’re going to make sure it stays that way.”

Tyler nodded. “Now that we are aware of the threat, it will not be difficult to keep them away from her.”

“You had better hope so, because if you let me down again, you’re the one who’s going to pay the price.”

“Yes, sir.”

Julian turned and headed down the hall. Maybe it really was a miracle, or maybe it was luck, but he never would have dared dream that the universe would bring Eva back to him. It was gratifying in so many ways. Not only did he have one of his best
