Lois was glad of his return to their usual relationship. She couldn’t think why he’d taken her hand. She couldn’t deny, however, what the contact with his large callused hand had done within her. A man’s hand holding hers—an almost forgotten sensation.

She cleared her mind of these thoughts. She’d deal with them later. “I was thinking of a dinner and mini dog-and-cat show, consisting of pets who need homes. Then a slide show with pictures of the remains of the old shelter and architect drawings of the new planned facility. Each ticket would cost five hundred dollars.”

Jacob gasped. “That much?”

She shrugged. “My husband taught me to always think big. There’s no reason why with good publicity and engraved invitations sent out to chosen donors that we couldn’t fill the Rittenhaus. Start off with a bang.” She faced him then.

He chuckled. “You are a woman of unexpected depths.”

This brought a smile to her mouth. She’d been feeling so down today. A compliment from someone she respected revived her. “Stick with me,” she teased. “I’ve just begun.”
