Chapter 30
Always cheerful Roni bounded out the main entrance of the school. Her blond pony tailed swung back and forth. "Good morning!" she said to Mac, as she approached him. Her hands were deep inside her sweater pockets.
"Hey there, why didn't you go to the gala?" Mac said.
"It was my mom's birthday, and we had a family thing," she replied. "I heard you and Mr. Jackson got into a fist-fight. What happened? Do-tell. The one year I'm not at the gala and I miss a fight."
"There was no fight. He was drunk and took a swing at me. He missed and fell to the floor. End of story."
"Why'd he take a swing at you?"
"Because that's the kind of stuff drunks do. I don't know."
"Hmm," Roni said with a little skepticism in her voice.
Teddy and Savannah's crazy mom didn't get out of her car. She dropped the kids off at the curb and allowed them to walk into the school all by themselves.
"Good morning, Savannah," Mac said, "Teddy."
Teddy stopped in front of Roni and Mac. "Hello, Mr. Mac. Miss Jacks. Speaking of good mornings, what happens when you eat yeast and shoe polish?" he asked.
"You go to the hospital?" Roni said.
"What happens?" Mac asked.
"You rise and shine!" His eyes twinkled with amusement, as he laughed all the way into the school.
"That Teddy is a funny little guy," Roni said.
"He sure is," Mac replied.
Approaching the school from all directions, mothers and fathers walked holding hands with their kids.
"Back to the Gala," Roni said, "Tell me more about the fight. Mr. Jackson had to have a reason he took a swing at you besides being drunk."
Mac told her about the scene with his wife making eye contact with him as her husband walked inside. He downplayed it as much as he could in hopes of squelching the rumor of a fight.
"Hey, let me ask you something. Can you keep this conversation between us?" he said.
"Of course I can. Remember, I'm going to school to be a cop, secrecy is part of the job," she said.
"Okay. What do you think of Stu Collins?"
"What do you mean?"
"Coach told me there are some students who think I'm a planted undercover narcotics officer. He asked if I thought Stu gave Seth the drugs he overdosed on."
"I've heard the kids think you're a narc, is it true?"
"No. I'm not a cop, I'm just a school marshal. Stu. What do you think of him? Why would he be so paranoid? Do you think he's involved in the drugs that Seth used?" he said.
"A good question. I think Stu's too immature to be a key player in any type of business. I see drug sales as a business," she said.
"Good point. Keep your eyes open and let me know if you see him doing anything suspicious. Even if you're not sure something is weird, let me know."
She jabbed him in the ribs. "Because you're an undercover cop, right?"
"No. Because Coach piqued my interest," he said, "What's your take on Kevin Jackson?"
"I told you before, he creeps me out.
