Chapter 4: A Night of Silk and Stars

“Do you still have those glass slippers?” asked Chole Kennedy one night. It had been several weeks since she and Bella had first become lovers, and the year was now coming into the autumn months. The nights were growing colder, and each lady was increasingly glad of the other’s warmth and company. No one seemed to suspect the true nature of their relationship, and they had taken to ever more daring displays of affection where others could see, as if daring others to comment.

“Of course,” answered Bella, rolling onto her stomach. She was lying naked on the rug in front of Chole Kennedy’s fireplace, and the room smelled of their recent copulation (Chole Kennedy had been teaching her to perform cunnilingus, and she had taken to it quite keenly). “Why do you ask?”

Chole Kennedy put a hand on Bella’s buttocks. They were the curviest part of her body, and they held a particular fascination for her. “Custom here demands that I, the Queen, throw a ball to celebrate the harvest, and to serve as a last hurrah before the long, months of winter. Everyone is welcome to attend, from the lowest crofter to the highest lord, and I would like you and your famous slippers to be there as well.”

“If that’s so, then I would love to go.” Bella beamed at her lover with real delight. “You know how much I love a ball!”

“It is to be in a month’s time,” said Chole Kennedy smiling back at her. “And I promise you that it shall be magnificent.”

When the day of the ball came, it was just as Chole Kennedy promised. People came from far and wide, decked in their finery to dance and drink in the Queen’s hall, and, to Bella, it was a wondrous night of silk and stars.

She and Chole Kennedy had new gowns for the occasion, in royal blue and forest green, and they drew everyone’s eyes as they walked down the grand staircase arm in arm. This worried her a little – for who was she, the cinder-girl, to walk with a Queen – but Chole Kennedy quickly made her forget her scruples. She introduced Bella to Rajas and Viscounts, merchants and yeomen, and Bella danced with all of them, her glass slippers twinkling and sparkling in the light of a thousand candles.

But, although Bella loved to dance, there was something she wanted even more. So when the music died down between songs, she quickly left her last partner and went straight to Chole Kennedy. Before the Queen could ask her what she was about, she took her hand, and pulled her past her guests, past her servants, to a small garden deep inside the castle walls, far from prying eyes.

“You little minx,” said Chole Kennedy, guessing her intentions. “Are you truly so impatient? I should have fucked you before we came downstairs – that would have at least kept you satisfied till it was time to retire for the night.
