PHILLIP HAD LEFT CLARENCE in charge with a lighter heart than heâd expected. Despite the older manâs continued gruffness, he treated Marjorie with gentleness and respectâand just the amount of firmness needed to get that stubborn lady to take it easy for at least one day.
He still intended to convince her to see a doctor sooner rather than later. The light-headedness that she blamed for her fall had to be caused by something, and he wouldnât let her ignore it. But that argument could wait for a couple of days. In the meantime, heâd keep a closer eye on her.
When he finally made it into the Twin Rivers office, he wasnât sure whether to be pleased or chagrined that no one seemed to have missed him. It was a good thing the place continued to run smoothly without his presence, given the unexpected amounts of time heâd taken off recently. Dexter was rightâhe should be proud that his company was doing so well, that his boys had grown up to be independent men. And he was.
But he was also rather thrilled that Marjorie had asked him to help find Joseph. It was nice to be needed. Maybe that was the root of his restlessnessâhe wanted to feel necessary again.
Just before three oâclock, he was wrapping up one last task with the intent of leaving early and heading back to Marjorieâs when his cell rang, indicating a call from Aubrey. He couldnât stopâdidnât want to stopâthe smile that curved his lips. With all the unexpected events of the day, he hadnât spent much time thinking of their kisses, though the memory had tickled just under the surface of his skin. Heâd been surprised that sheâd made the first move, and though her kiss had been no more than a chaste peck on the cheek, his body had reacted as if sheâd wrapped her naked form around him. And he hadnât been the only one physically affected. Her eyes had dilated when heâd told her he liked the new Aubrey, and she hadnât retreated when he given her his own soft kiss. He loved how dazed sheâd looked after such an innocent exchange and wondered what sheâd be like if he ever focused on seducing her.
That was a thought...
His phone rang again and he snatched it up.
âAm I interrupting something?â Her voice curled out of the speaker and into his belly. âI talked with Clarence and Marjorie, so I know your day has been a bit of a mess. If you donât have time right now...â
âNo, Iâm good. You heard about Marjorieâs fall, then?â It hadnât crossed his mind to let her know what had happened. Heâd have to remember to do so in future. After all, Marjorie would soon be her stepmother. That fact hadnât quite sunk in.
âYes. She said she was dizzy. Do you think she has low blood pressure, or maybe low blood sugar? It was first thing in the morning.â
âBoth are possible. I plan to browbeat her into seeing a doctor soon.
