Sleep took its sweet time coming to claim me last night even with help so, when I wake, the morning sunlight is streaming forcefully through the small, circular window above my bed. I hear voices below – Shirley is over – and I smell coffee. Exactly what I need.

Glancing in the mirror, I cringe to see puffy, red eyes staring back at me. Late in the night before sleep won out, the tears visited me again. No more of that. It’s a new day and there are plenty of things for me to do to keep my mind off the red-hot billionaire in my life with chips of ice inside his soul.

My phone chirps and I feel a strange mix of dread and hope that it’s Samuel. It’s not.

Tabitha: Had a great time seeing you again last night! Callie and I are meeting for coffee and muffins next Saturday morning if you want to join. Thought you might like this picture they’re posting on the Chronicle’s site about the event.

It’s a picture of Samuel and me dancing, a closeup taken by a professional photographer I hadn’t even noticed. I was too busy staring at the man in front of me. We look like a happy couple. I suppose that’s what he wanted, for our fake relationship to appear real. I wish I didn’t feel so melancholy staring at it.

After sending a text agreeing to meet the ladies next week, I put my phone aside. “Are you awake up there, sleepyhead?” Pappouli calls up the steps.

“Yes, I’ll be down in a moment.”

“Good. The coffee is getting cold and Samuel brought bougátsa.”

My heart skips a beat. “What?”

“Bougátsa. With lots of cinnamon and chocolate syrup from the pastry shop on-”

“I know what bougátsa is, Pappouli! What do you mean…” My words die as I lean over the railing of the loft and see Pappouli standing in the living room below.

Beside him stands a younger, taller man staring up at me with eyes as blue as the Mediterranean Sea and filled with an emotion I’m intimately familiar with - regret.
