With her elbow bent and her hand supporting her head, Kelsey watched from his bed as Ben packed his sleek suitcase. He paused, hesitating before he added another pair of pants.

“I’ll be fine,” Kelsey said, as she reclined on his pillow.

“But you can’t drive. What if you need to buy something you can’t carry home?”

“What? Like a watermelon? Seriously, Ben, Nancy’s right next door.”

“Does Natalie plan to visit?” he asked, as he stuffed a pair of dress shoes in the side compartment.

“Your sister will be here on Wednesday,” she nodded and laughed, “Dad.”

He tackled her, pinning her beneath him on the mattress. His suitcase tumbled to the floor, and Ben didn’t seem to care. “I’ll miss you,” he said between kisses.

“Mmm-miss you, too.” Her humming words tickled the spot where their lips connected. “You’re gonna miss your flight.”

“Good plan.”

“Go!” She wrestled away from his exploring hands. “I still need to get ready before I catch the train to The Center. Do you have everything packed?”

“Yeah,” he grumbled and zipped the bag shut. They kissed goodbye halfway down the stairs and again up against the front door. After she shoved him outside, Kels propped her shoulder against the doorframe and watched Ben toss his bag in the backseat. He ran back to the porch and stole another kiss before he left.

“Baby, be good,” he said over his shoulder as he bounded back to his car.

Be good? She tipped her head against the frame of the open door and watched as he disappeared down the street. Where had that come from?

Fighting the empty echo of the house, she was about to turn up the music when her phone vibrated on the desk by her laptop. Ben better not be texting while he’s driving.

The screen lit, and she spotted his name. Mark.

Please call me, Kelsey. I need to see you.

Not yet.

With shaking fingers, she swept the message away, suddenly relieved that Mark didn’t know where to find her.
