CESSNA ARRANGED the drop-off for Saturday morning, and Jay helped load the computer into the back of Ben’s Lexus. Cary had a hangover. All week long, she’d begun to doubt this was a good idea after all, and on Friday night, she had a little too much to drink as a result. But it was too late to back out. The plan was already in motion. She contemplated going just as she was, dressed in sweats, because she might not look so out of place in the trailer park. But, who did she think she was kidding? She would never fit in there, nor would she want to.

Cessna chattered away as they drove across town. “This is great, Mom. I really like the idea of our families getting closer.” She looked out the window and hummed a little tune.

Cary wasn’t certain if Cessna’s joy was entirely about their families’ possibility of connecting, or if it was a way for her to have more of a connection with Jeremy. She couldn’t imagine their families suddenly becoming friends. Their differences were too great. Could a tiny baby bridge such a gap? Or would it just make their differences more pronounced?

“Do you think Jeremy’s family is happy for us?”

Her daughter was talking like they were an already married couple.

“I don’t know what they’re thinking.”

“You talked with his mom, right?”

Cary shook her head. “No, I don’t work with her anymore—it wouldn’t be right—given our new circumstances and all.”

This seemed to make Cessna happy, as she nodded and smiled.

Cary’s T-shirt was wet under her arms; she’d have to leave her denim jacket on. The closer they got, the more nervous she became. In The Court, kids were running around all over, so they slowed down. There were no adults in sight.

“Tell me where to turn,” she said.

Cessna pointed to a tiny driveway. The lots were very small, and there was little space between them. She inched the Lexus next to the beat-up Taurus in the driveway. Cessna jumped out and ran to the trailer, and Jeremy met her at the top step. Cary popped open the back with the touch of a button, and then Jeremy was there, lifting out the computer in one fluid movement. Cessna followed behind him with the keyboard.

“Mom, you bring the printer,” Cessna called over her shoulder.

As Cary headed toward the trailer with the printer, Lily appeared at the door, nervously rubbing her hands together. Two little boys ran down the steps and chased each other around the narrow driveway.

Cary hoped that coming here wasn’t a big mistake. She plastered a grin on her face and climbed up the steps. A blurry dot in her left eye made Lily’s face swim. She put her hand up to shield her eyes from the sunlight and had to sit down on the steps, placing the printer beside her. She felt nauseous.

“Are you feeling okay? Do you need some water?” Lily asked, then yelled, “Jeremy, go get a glass of water.”

“I’ll be fine. It’ll go away.
