TWELVE
âFelix is gone,â Jonas said from behind her. Brooke spun to find him standing in the doorway that led from the back.
âWhat?â
âHeâs gone.â He rubbed a hand over his face, his weariness palpable.
âThereâs no way anyone could have taken him,â Brooke said.
Jonas shook his head. âI donât think anyone took him. I think he left on his own. Iâm pretty sure he slipped out the back door.â
âThat door doesnât sound the alarm when opened?â
âNot if the alarm is cut off. Felix knows the code.â
She looked at Chase, who bolted for the door. Nicholas spoke rapidly on the phone, then hung up and followed after Chase.
âWeâll search around here, you start calling friends,â Chase said. He shut the door behind him.
Brooke snapped her gaze to Mercy who lay near a line of waiting room chairs. âSheâs not a search and rescue dog, but sheâs had some training. Iâll see if she can pick up his scent.â
âFelix slept on the cot in the back last night, the one on the left as you walk in the room.â
âGood. Mercy, heel.â The dog leapt to her feet and rushed over to plant herself at Brookeâs side. Brooke led the way to the back with Jonas and Mercy at her side. In the room, she stopped at the cot, snagged the pillow and held it to Mercyâs nose. âFind him, girl.â The dog sniffed, nudged it and sniffed again. Then her nose went to the floor, back into the air. She darted out of the bedroom, down the hall and to the back door.
Brooke pushed it open. Mercy darted out. Her nose quivering, she led them to the edge of the property that backed up to another building. Here she stopped, whined, sniffed the ground, tested the air then sat. âShe lost the scent.â
âWhat does that mean?â
âFelix could have gotten into a car. Do any of his friends drive?â
âNone that I know of. Heâs thirteen. If heâs got older friends, theyâd be from school and I donât know about them.â He paused. âActually, some of the guys on the track team drive, but he doesnât hang out with them.â
âThat you know of.â
âYes.â He paced three steps then back. âWhat if he was picked up by the people after him? What if they were watching, just waiting for a chance to grab him?â
Brooke hated that he voiced her thoughts. Sheâd been hoping he wouldnât think about that. âLetâs just pray he contacts you soon or that we find him.â She looked around. âYour security cameras wonât reach this far, will they?â
âNo.â
Brooke led Mercy back to the office and let her inside. âWe need to find him,â Brooke said to Jonas. âWould you call the friend he was with the night someone broke in?â
âOf course.â He reached for his phone, his face pale, jaw tight. She figured he might be experiencing a wide range of emotions. Anger for Felix for leaving, fear his decision would result in tragic consequences. Indecision about what to do next.
Brooke frowned and set out a bowl of water for Mercy.
