The police moved in to break up a final public meeting in downtown Regina, and a terrible riot resulted. Police beat the demonstrators unmercifully with wooden clubs, and the demonstrators fought back with whatever they could lay their hands on. Bullets were fired, one policeman died from his injuries, dozens were wounded and 130 trekkers were arrested. The trek was over. However, this smaller contingent set out from Toronto on July 17, 1935 and reached Ottawa 22 days later. The prime minister scolded them for 15 minutes.
