Two days later, the bird arrived from Midport. A servant brought it to the Duke. He read it, and it shocked him, he could hardly believe what he was reading and then he read it again. He looked up. “Please ask the crown prince to come to my study. Also, ask my wives to come as well. This is critical.” The servant hurried off, and the Duke sat and thought about what he’d read.

Shortly the Randall walked in and saw the look on the Duke’s face. “Marvon, what’s wrong?”

“Please sit down and read this.” He handed the prince the message.

Randall took the message and read it. Then he looked up. “They’re safe, thank god their safe!” Randall then put the message on the Duke’s desk and sat back.

Just then, Edwin’s two wives arrived. “Please shut the door and take a seat and read this message.” He held up the message. The two women sat down next to each other and read the message.

“Oh, my God! The royal family attacked; I can’t believe it.”

Randall looked distressed. “Marvon, what do you make of this?”

“First, your sister was right. More importantly, this isn’t the only threat. Something this bold has to have a backup plan, we need to be on guard for that. Remember the assassins I told you about; they’re the threat now. They’re the backup plan.

Randall, remember the letter from Raman. This may be why Seldin disappeared. If the king ordered this, he would set it up. He’s smart enough to realize that he wouldn’t survive this, even if it succeeded.

Randall thought about it. He didn’t like the implications. A move against his family by Porfia couldn’t be ignored. But they’d need proof.

The next day brought one more shock. Another bird arrived, letting them know that there was an assassination attempt at the inn. Once again, the plot was foiled by the man Michael from the home world. They all gathered in the Duke’s office to go over the latest development.

“Well, Randall, this young man, Michael seems to be quite the formidable fellow. Taking down two assassins even with home world weapons, is an accomplishment. These were members of the assassin’s guild, I’m sure of it. But my information indicates there are more. So, this may not be over. This Michael sounds like a well-trained soldier. Paul told me that some of their soldiers were deadly shots. All of them marksmen, killing their enemies at over 500 yards or more. This Michael must be trained like that; I suspect that the bandits had no idea who was killing them or from where. This Michael seems to be looking after your family. Thank God. I must send a bird to Edwin to warn him.”

“The prophecy is that he would be a warrior-scholar. Also, that he would marry my daughter Catrina or that is part of the vision. If all of this has turned out this way, then how much of the other part will turn out to be true?”

“Once Prince Roddrick gets here, we’ll have to have a reception.
