Chapter Six

Lucas paced like a caged tiger from one corner of his bedchamber to the other. Moonlight streaked through the windows as a candle on the dresser cast a dark glow over the room. Crickets hummed an annoying racket of chirps. He’d retired to bed hours earlier but he couldn’t sleep, too confused and frustrated to do anything but fume over Jaye’s rejection.

He felt antsy, and his body raged for release. He usually visited a brothel when he felt this on edge but a soiled dove wouldn’t do. Lucas needed her beneath him as he needed the air in his lungs―Jaye’s sarcastic wit and pride held him spellbound—and he feared he’d never let her go if he enjoyed the pleasures of her body.

Perhaps I should thank her for refusing me? The thought of marrying her didn’t scare him as much as it should and that fact chilled the blood in his veins.

Jaye Ramsey was a conundrum―innocence and heat. He wanted to protect her like a porcelain doll and likewise fill her succulent body with his. A small part of him wished she’d denied his accusation and slapped him for it. Every fiber in his body demanded he question her further and then find the man who’d stolen her virtue and beat the worthless cad to a pulp. Lucas wasn’t a first-rate gentleman but he’d never steal a woman’s most prized possession and then abandon her.

Lucas scrubbed his hands down his face. He’d shared dinner with Jaye in the receiving room as usual but they barely spoke to one another. Mrs. Clemens shot him dark stares all evening and Burton wouldn’t look him in the eye—at least they only spurned him for the unsupervised walk through the forest, not for his indecent proposal—and Lucas now believed Mrs. Clemens was right to try to protect Jaye from his wicked ways. Jaye apparently didn’t desire him as strongly as he did her, and he should’ve known better than to proposition her.

He plopped down in a heavy winged-back chair in the darkest corner and hung his head between his knees. Lucas replayed the conversation he had with Jaye in his mind to figure out why she rejected him and soon realized he should’ve expressed his feelings and wants better. He wasn’t the sort of man, however, to wear his emotions on his sleeve. He’d rather show her how he felt and what he wanted with his hands, lips and the shaft between his legs.

His frustration grew by the minute. Lucas grabbed the metal candleholder off the dresser and left the room. His bare feet padded against the cold hardwood floor, his breeches fit lax around his knees and his loose-fitting linen shirt reached his hips. In a state of undress for the night, he didn’t care to dress properly for a conversation a true gentleman would never initiate with a woman. Lucas prowled to the far end of the hall, fully aware his servants had gone to bed in another wing of the house.
