Spencer shook the proffered hand heartily. "Spencer Raft. A pleasure to meet you, Dr. Hyden."
The fuse on Allison's temper had just about burned out again. "Would you two gentlemen please get acquainted somewhere else. I have work to do." She spun around and headed for the animal cages. Spencer caught the hem of her lab coat and pulled her up short.
"Uh-uh. We're discussing a scientific experiment here. Romeo can wait."
"Rasputin," she snapped, trying unsuccessfully to work her coat from his steely grip. "I don't know anything about a scientific experiment that concerns you."
"Sure you do," Spencer went on, undaunted. "Ann told me all about it last night. She went into considerably more detail on your work than you and Davis did the other night at dinner. She said you wanted to conduct experiments on the correlation between heredity and intelligence. You told her, this week in fact, that if you found a suitable sire you'd like to have a baby to test your theories on."
How could a statement so innocently spoken ricochet so incriminatingly? "Ann was still dopey after her surgery," she exclaimed. "In answer to her question about my work, I jokingly said it was a shame I couldn't experiment with a human baby. That's all there was to it. I wasn't serious. I didn't literally mean that I wanted to have a baby for such a purpose."
"Why not? if you have a man volunteering to father it?"
"Yes, why not?" Dr. Hyden chimed in.
"Why not?" she gasped. Was she the only sane person left on the planet?
"I repeat that I think it's an excellent idea," Dr. Hyden said. "I told you you'd make a perfect mother. All you needed was an equally qualified father." He ignored Allison's dismayed stare and addressed Spencer. "Please don't be offended by my questions."
"Fire away," Spencer said congenially, dropping onto the stool once more. He was at ease and, by all indications, enjoying himself immensely.
"Do you know what your I.Q. is?"
"Somewhere around a hundred and seventy I think."
Dr. Hyden's eyebrows shot up, impressed. He lowered his glasses from the top of his head and subjected Spencer to a thorough going-over. "You certainly are an impressive physical specimen. Are both your parents still living?"
"Yes."
"In good health?"
"Excellent."
"Brothers or sisters?"
"Unfortunately I'm an only child."
"No hereditary diseases in your family, I hope."
"None that I know of."
"A nice-looking fellow too." Dr. Hyden turned to Allison, who was standing with her arms folded beneath her breasts, foot tapping, fuming. "Congratulations. You've selected a perfect specimen."
"I didn't select him for anything! I'm dutifully impressed with his qualifications, but I hardly want to have a baby with every stud who has a Phi Beta Kappa key."
Dr. Hyden thoughtfully weighed her words and turned back to Spencer. He was scowling slightly. "Are you a 'stud' just out for a good time?"
"No." Spencer left the stool and, with no regard for Dr. Hyden's judgmental eyes, came to stand in front of Allison. "I like Allison very much. I think she likes me. I want to develop a relationship with her.
