Fenced In
Rue Corker was a bowlegged redhead with an outraged voice, a sour smile, and a flair for fatal diagnosis. She was known as Nurse Hearse on the cardiac unit in Little Rock where she and Patsy Evans both worked, and her clairvoyance carried over into other areas as well: she predicted colleaguesâ affairs and divorces with nerveless accuracy. She was, as Patsyâs boyfriend Reeves put it, âno fun,â and yet Patsy often ended up spending time with her, touched by the older womanâs loneliness and flattered, she had to admit it, by Rueâs mysterious devotion to her.
âYouâre the only reason I even stay in this town,â Rue said, settling beside Patsy in the hospital cafeteria one winter morning.
Patsy looked up from her coffee, alarmed.
âThatâs all right. Iâm sure Reeves never makes you feel important. All Iâm saying,â Rue raised a bony hand as Patsy started to protest, âis that youâre not full of yourself like every other fool on this floor. Youâre modest. So modest,â she paused, squeezing some lemon into her tea, âthat you didnât even brag about winning the scholarship to the surgery seminar at Stanford next week.â
âHow do you know I won the scholarship?â For some reason Patsy felt frightened. âI just found out from Dr. Hersey a few minutes ago.â
Rue shrugged, then twisted toward a passing orderly. âWould you watch where youâre going?â she hissed. âDo you think weâre in a skating rink? Nothingâs a secret around here. Look.â Rue pushed her cup back. âYouâre going to be gone eight weeks, right? And youâll need your car in California, so youâre probably driving, right? Well, I want to drive out west with you.â
âThatâs impossible,â Patsy said.
âWhy? Is Reeves going?â
âNo. Reeves canât leave hisâ¦â
ââ¦other girlfriends, ha ha?â
ââ¦his job. Anyway,â Patsy finished, âIâm not even sure Iâm taking the scholarship. I havenât decided.â
Rue made a little spitting noise, and Patsy flushed. Of course she was taking the scholarship. It was the break she had been hoping for all year.
âYouâve decided,â Rue drawled, and then, in the next breath, âPlease.â
It was such a surprising word that Patsy stared.
âPuh-leeze.â Rue clasped her hands and lurched forward, and for a horrifying second Patsy feared she was going to actually kneel on the cafeteria floor. Rueâs pale face pointed up at her, green eyes wet with longing. âPlease take me with you. Iâve never gone anywhere, Iâve never done anything, I can help with the driving, Iâll pay for the gas, I wonât be any trouble, I promise. Please? Please? Just say yes. Would it kill you to just say yes?â
âIt would kill me.â Reeves, who had never done anything he didnât want to do in his life, sat naked on the bed, strumming âOh! Susannaâ on his guitar as Patsy moped around the apartment, dropping photographs of him into her suitcase. âThree days in a car with a nut case? Why are you doing this to yourself? â
âShe has a good heart,â Patsy said, her voice uncertain. She sank onto the bed and pressed her face against Reevesâs bare chest.
