How long we may have gazed on a particular scenery and think that we have seen and known it, when, at length, some bird or quadruped comes and takes possession of it before our eyes, and imparts to it a whole new character.

Thoreau had assisted on the Underground Railroad since before moving to the pond; he writes that he helped an escaping slave while living there. In 1854, Anthony Burns, a slave attempting to escape to Canada, was arrested in Boston under the new act and returned to the South. Thoreau was so angry that he wrote the essay Slavery In Massachusetts, which was widely read and published in many abolitionist newspapers.
