Chablis

Stupid scale. Dumb device.

I step on it. I step off. On it. Off it. On. Off.

Finally, I wind up and kick it clear across the bathroom. It slides across the tile and whacks into the side of the tub, where it leaves a tiny dent on the white enamel. I’m naked and sweating, and I need to put my workout clothes on and head to the gym, but I can’t get the math out of my head.

Forty pounds lost.

The scale hasn’t budged in four weeks.

So, I’m on a weight-loss plateau.

How did this happen? I exercise six days a week, and I’m still living on my clean foods diet with the grilled chicken and eggs and leafy greens and Greek yogurt and berries and coffee and tea. And I don’t cheat.

Well…not anymore.

“Ahhhhh! Why? Why?” I pull my robe back on, run, and launch myself onto my bed, which is ten baby steps away from the bathroom door, so I don’t travel far. I turn over, snatch my phone from the nightstand, and stare at the screen. No texts from John. Seeing a message from him would be the only thing that would yank me up out of my bad mood. But nothing’s there.

Weight is only a number. I need to take three calming breaths and chillax. It could just be water retention, or maybe I added some muscle. There’s a reason somewhere, I’m sure of it. In the meantime, I need to get dressed and go work out.
