GENUINE SELF-CONFIDENCE

Self-confidence based on wealth or social position is a fragile structure that can crumble unexpectedly. Genuine self-confidence is molded by something much deeper.

Another important lesson I’ve learned is not to pretend to be something I’m not or know something I don’t. My chosen profession placed me in close association with many astute and highly intelligent community leaders. I needed their confidence and respect. As a result of my limited education and lack of experience, I was acutely aware of my limitations. I knew, however, that I would be judged by what I said and evaluated by my responses to questions. So I learned to listen carefully, limit what I said, and seek to understand the other person’s perspective. I learned not to speak beyond what I knew and not to challenge someone’s view before I thought I understood it.

Once again my teachers were those with whom I worked. Most were older and more experienced, and as a result they often intimidated me. To overcome this intimidation, I learned to ask questions before I was asked questions. As long as I could encourage others to share their opinions and experiences, I could keep them from expecting answers I was in no position to give. In the process of asking questions, I learned from the answers I received. I soon realized that this was the best way for me to gain the education of which I had been deprived.

I sought to make every successful person I met my teacher. I learned from them all. I benefited from their experiences. The more I learned, the more secure I became. As time passed I became a teacher. What I learned I shared, and as I shared I learned more and was able to do more for those with whom I worked.

The lessons we learn from those who have achieved success are the most important, because they are based on reality, experience, and proven effectiveness. My mentors gave me the building blocks, not only of my competence, but also of my self-confidence.
