It’s strange the way a writer’s fame begins slowly creeping up to him and then racing so that after a while he seems to be a poor relation of his own fame. People of taste and sensitiveness, writers, political workers and actors (who are now showing signs of being extremely left wing), socialist doctors, factory workers and technical instructors in touch with their labor organizations are all well aware of Orwell.

Yesterday at the P.E.N. world congress lunch I sat at a table with [Arthur] Koestler, Cyril Connolly, Stevie Smith, Guy Chapman, Koestler’s girl friend Miss Hardy…Rene Avord, of la France Libre, who has some other name, and a German refugee writer. Koestler was betting that Orwell would be the greatest best seller in five years time and our bet was five bottles of burgundy.
