This is a method of natural pain relief that both of us have used. Through our work and preparation with hypnobirthing we were encouraged to picture a place that felt calm and peaceful to us, somewhere empowering. For Teresa’s first birth that place was at the base of the Bodhi tree, with a clear sky and a warm slight breeze; for Forest’s birth it was floating over the water in the ocean; and for Poet’s birth it was the image of Poet looking into Teresa’s eyes. For Sarah, those places were walking a long path on a warm day to the ocean, hearing the sounds of the ocean on the shore, and imagining feeling weightless in the water.

Find what works for you, the images that bring you to a place of calm. Familiarize yourself with your image, even if it’s just a color—it should feel safe, like home. Meditate on it every day in the lead-up to birth so when you’re in the middle of your birthing experience it will be easy to access, as it’ll be so familiar to you.
