BEHIND THE SCENES

Shane Lavender was enlisted as Brad’s bowling aid.

One time I was kicking the footy with one of my best mates at the front of his house. Suddenly George [Brad] appeared, riding across my mate’s front lawn. He goes to the mailbox, chucks the letters in and, as he does that, sees me.

He looked shocked, and asked, ‘What the hell are you doing here?’

‘I’m at my mate’s house.’

He looks at me, the house, the mailbox and then his gaze lands on my mate, and he says, ‘This is your house?’

My mate says, ‘Yeah, it’s my mum and dad’s house.’

‘Mate, you tell your parents that from now on they will get all of their mail.’

Then he took off.

I was about 15 or 16 at the time, and George had just joined Willetton. He trained a lot with my cousin Mark, but then Mark started working full-time. But George hadn’t twigged to the restrictions of a nine-to-five full-time job, and he kept ringing him saying they should have a net. Mark tried to explain that was difficult as he was now working full-time. It took some time for that message to sink in.

Eventually Mark gave him my phone number and said I’d throw balls to him. He quickly worked out an arrangement. He would pick up my cricket kit from the back of my mum and dad’s house so I could wag the last lesson of school and join him in the nets to hit balls with him.
