Chapter 17 - Leah

Slipping into the clothes David bought for me, I wince at the tenderness still pulsing through my leg. David's choice of attire is practical—comfortable jeans, a simple t-shirt, and sneakers, but a dress or a skirt would've been much easier to put on.

I could barely hobble into the restroom. Getting in here consisted of half-dragging myself and half-balancing on David's back, but I insisted on trying to dress myself alone. He's perched on the edge of the pedestal sink now, obviously worried he might have to catch me, but he doesn't offer any assistance yet. His nostrils twitch as he watches me try to step into the legs of the pants, probably noticing the way I hiss out my breaths when the fabric slides against the open sores.

When he hops off the ledge, I figure I'm about to be swallowed up by those great big arms of his. "Need some help?" he asks.

"Yeah," I admit after a moment's hesitation. Pride has no place in our current situation, and practicality demands a concession. I gingerly step my good leg into one leg hole. "Here. Hold the other leg still."

He kneels beside me, his hands hovering uncertainly before gently assisting me in pulling the jeans over my injured leg. The touch is both comforting and disconcerting, sending shivers through me. It's intimate in a way, with how he holds me up, touching my skin with sure fingers, pulling the pants onto me.

I sit down on the lid of the toilet, leaning on the tank and lifting my good leg to tug the jeans the rest of the way on. David slides the jeans up the other side while avoiding the damage the wolf bit into, and I reach the hem over my butt. I'd have been crippled without his help. David rises back up to his full height, watching me closely as I hop into position to zip up my fly. He adjusts the buttonhole over the button and reaches across to secure it. The jeans hug my waist, fitting me exactly right. How did he know?

As I slide on the shirt, I catch him stealing glances. I guess I don't exactly mind. It's nice to be admired by an attractive man. I pause, and he lifts his face, studying me intently before he reaches to tie my ponytail, his fingers working carefully to make sure he gets every hair into place. The thoughtfulness in such a simple gesture does something crazy to my insides.

The last few days have been more emotional than I'm used to or happy with, but one thing has become clear to me: David is incredibly complex. An enigma in himself. A mountain of contradictions. Loner. Softie. Tough guy. Brawny.

Yet, he's not afraid to care. I've seen it over and over. I hear it in his interactions with the pack, feel it in his touches, watch it in the way he walks alongside me when the going gets tough.

When I'm fixed up again and presentable, he keeps his hands on the delicate skin of my neck, watching my face for something.
