Chapter 12

Adel left Iris sleeping in his room and teleported to the Military Mage headquarters within Waytherlands. He couldn’t sleep. Thoughts of her kept creeping into his mind, no matter how inconvenient the timing was. How could someone with all her blessings and gifts make such terrible decisions? He believed she was genuinely sorry for her actions, but part of him still didn’t trust her.

To be honest, his attraction increased with every moment he spent with her. He had a knack for falling for the wrong person.

Adel arrived early to recenter his world and focus on the task at hand. He clicked on the lights, relaxed back in his office chair, and waited for the system to boot. He wanted to study the Frostville map one more time before their team infiltrated the realm. The Mage Alliance army had developed supernatural weaponry and enhanced their magic with advanced technologies, and he wanted to be well informed before going into battle.

The human population on Earth would descend into chaos if they knew how many aliens were on their planet. Portals opened and closed daily at least a dozen times. Since mortals came out of the trees, the legends of magic mythology had been fodder for fiction.

An hour later, Iris materialized in the command center. “Were you able to get any rest?” Adel swiveled in the chair.

“A little. Wow, they remodeled the place.” Iris wore her new black form-fitting uniform splendidly.

“Yeah. It gets a facelift about every ten years.”

“I love the sick ergonomic workstations.”

He chuckled.

“What? Isn’t that the new word for cool?” Iris pulled over the chair to gaze at his monitor.

“Sure, it just sounds funny coming from you.”

“Why? Because I’m older than dirt?”

His eyes locked with hers. “You don’t look a day over twenty-one.”

“Somebody likes me. Somebody loves me.” She giggled.

“You’re growing on me.” Adel didn’t want her to know how much he liked her.

She nudged his shoulder. “For future reference, I read thoughts. Not everyone’s, but I get the gist of the meaning.”

“So, you must have a memory of an elephant.”

“How do you know they have memories?” She chuckled.

“Gotta check their trunks.” He grinned. “I know—lame joke, but I wanted to hear you laugh.” She’d been so severe since they arrived in Waytherlands.

“Do you date anyone?”

Well, well, well, this sounded promising. “I used to date a girl named Nebula, but she was really out there.” He laughed.

“You’re just a comedian today. I like this side of you.”

“I’m glad you approve.”

She leaned over the desk, and her tone changed quickly. “In all seriousness, as soon as we open the Frostville portal, Valdoor will know we’re there. Likely, he’s prepared for it. You’ve seen his army. But did you know he created golems?”

“What? For real?” He linked his fingers behind his head and leaned back in his adjustable chair.

“Uh-huh. The golems look mortal. Oh, I took something of my grandfather’s, and he’ll go berserk when he finds out it’s gone.” Iris opened her backpack and showed him Valdoor’s grimoire.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.
