Chapter Thirteen
A week had already passed, and a lot had happened. Julia went back to college, and Cora had accompanied her mother to two doctorâs appointments to discuss her illness and adjust her medication and therapy sessions. Two more guests had arrived at the inn, and the restaurant had been fully booked twice over the weekend, causing her to jump in to help the waitstaff.
Between caring for her mother and running the inn and restaurant, she was exhausted and felt stuck in a whirlwind. Andrea had called two days ago to inform her that she would be arriving today. Cora was elated for the extra help that her sister would provide because she truly needed it.
Cora sat in her fatherâs office, going over the numbers. So far, the net income of the inn and restaurant was favorable; there were only a few creditors, and the inventory of all assets and supplies looked great. Her fatherâs records were well detailed, which meant she had little reason to question her mom or the staff to fill in the gaps.
There was a knock on the door, startling her.
âCome in,â she instructed.
âHey,â Jamie greeted her as he stepped through the door. His frame was slightly taller and more solid than her fatherâs as it filled up the opening. âDo you have a minute?â
âSure, come in,â Cora told him, packing up the ledgers and putting them aside as Jamie fully stepped into the office.
âI wanted to know if you have a preference for the type of wood I use to frame the gazebo,â he asked.
He and his crew had shown up the day following their time at the bar. They had started to fit together the platform for the extension of the dock. Jamie had explained that they would be using aluminum pipes to secure the deck before putting up an additional frame to build a double-decker dock upward.
âWhat are the options?â she asked, removing her reading glasses.
âCedar, rosewood, and spruce wood,â he listed.
Cora thought over the options, not knowing what the difference in each was.
âWhich one would you choose?â she asked.
âWell,â he stated, âall three are great choices, but in terms of durability, cedar is moisture and decay-resistant and repels insects.â He gave her his professional opinion.
âCedar it is, then,â she affirmed.
âThatâs a cute picture,â Jamie stated, looking behind her.
Cora turned to the picture in question. It was a picture of her and her daughters at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe. Erin had just entered her teenage years and was going through the awkward phase of her body and emotions changing. Joel, on her request, had planned an African Safari tour, and the view and splendor of the falls had been the icing on the cake of one of the most beautiful trips they had ever been on.
âThose are my daughters,â she explained. âYou briefly met Julia.â She pointed at the younger-looking girl beaming from ear to ear in the photo. âAnd thatâs Erin.â
Erinâs face was the total opposite of her sisterâs as she looked into the camera with a slight, shy smile on her face.
