NUTRITION FOR BREAST-FEEDING MOTHERS
I’m not a pediatrician, so I’m not going to give you detailed advice on how to feed your baby. However, because of the overwhelming weight of scientific evidence, there is consensus that “breast is best.” Exclusive breast-feeding is recommended for at least the first four months of life. That being said, for many reasons, many women cannot or do not choose to breast-feed. The caloric guideline of an extra 500 calories per day is for exclusive breast-feeders. If you are breast-feeding less often, you should consume less.
Okay, I lied. I’m going to make one plea for the pediatric diet. If you had a C-section or took antibiotics during your labor or delivery, or your baby was given antibiotics after birth, add infant probiotic drops to your milk. If you are breast-feeding and have a pump, add these drops to the bottle of your pumped milk before feeding. Your baby’s gut flora needs the support. High-quality science is increasingly recognizing how essential this is to human health.
