THE HUMAN INSTRUMENT
Although all four awarenesses operate within each of us, our preferred and dominant awareness filters how we begin to process information. For example, the AIR element sees new ideas first, the FIRE element longs for actions first, the WATER element feels reactions first, and the EARTH element initially sees all the problems inherent in building a project or completing a goal.
DOMINANT ELEMENTS IN ACTION
Here are some examples of element combinations:
• If the dominant AIR element has as its secondary process EARTH, the focus will be on theory first and the practical side of the theory second. If EARTH is first and AIR is second, the reverse would be true. Consideration for FIRE and WATER elements are often forgotten or minimized and little thought is given to the impact of decisions on others.
• When the FIRE element is first and the AIR element is second, an idea is run with and put into action—and nothing had better get in the way or “rain on the parade.” Things get done quickly, although not always effectively since the responses are only to current data without the considerations of past experience and more detailed information. If AIR is first and FIRE is second, the focus is on theory with strong reactions to criticism or obstacles to expressing the theory. Moving quickly from one project or activity to another, there is little tolerance of WATER and EARTH expressions—and taking care of the physical body may be neglected or forgotten.
• When the FIRE element has EARTH as its second element, there will be a striving to be in perpetual action. While focusing on controlling sensate and practical outcomes, there will be a tendency to bulldoze others in getting things done. When EARTH is first and FIRE is second, there will be a tendency to over-control events and over-parent people. Lack of tolerance for AIR and WATER can often alienate others, causing a team or family to break down.
• When the WATER element is first and AIR is second, there is the tendency to be the philosopher who continuously seeks personal meaning to life. When AIR is first and WATER is second, the philosopher strives to right the wrongs of the world through an intellectual abstract process. Failing to deal with the realities of life, there can be a lack of understanding of the practical results-driven qualities of FIRE and EARTH and often an inability to build appropriate boundaries and deal adequately with issues.
