Chapter 23

The moment the front door closed behind them, Lottie knew how this evening was going to end. What was more, it was the way she wanted it to end. Enough with the game-playing and the self-preservation; she’d waited too long to discover how it would feel to finally – finally! – have sex with Max Farrell.

The air inside the flat seemed to be alive with electricity. He was looking around her living room, taking it all in, paying attention to the decor, her choice of furniture, the artwork on the walls and the night-time view through the window of the waves hitting the rocks. Lottie poured wine into two glasses and passed one to him, but Max didn’t even take a sip before placing it on the low table. Slowly he turned to face her, and she held her breath, the sense of anticipation almost overwhelming.

‘I want to kiss you,’ he murmured. ‘I want to kiss you so much.’

How long had she been waiting for this to happen? Too long. Far too long. She smiled. ‘Go on then.’

‘Only if you want me to.’

‘Try me and see.’

He moved closer and held her face in his hands. She tilted her head back, lifting her heels fractionally off the floor, and prayed her lips weren’t pushing forward, trumpet style, like a character in a cartoon, so desperate was she to reach his mouth.

And now they were kissing, and it was everything she’d remembered and more. The sensations were out of this world. Lottie’s eyes were closed and her head was in a whirl. His warm fingertips were caressing the back of her neck. They were toe to toe, their bodies pressing together with abandon—

‘Lottie? Lottie! Helloooo, it’s meeeeee!’

What? Oh God. Oh no, don’t let this be happening, not now.

‘Lottie, I know you’re there, the lights are on! Let me in!’ Bang bang bang went the flat of a hand against the front door.

‘Whoever they are, they have immaculate timing,’ Max murmured.

At least they were at the far end of the room, well away from the window and not visible from outside. Stepping back and thinking fast, Lottie tried to figure out what to do.

‘Could you ask her to leave us alone?’ prompted Max.

‘It won’t work.’

‘Hey, if she’s a friend of yours, wouldn’t she understand?’

Helplessly, she shook her head. ‘It’s not a friend. And she’s not going to take no for an answer.’

His smile was rueful. ‘OK. In that case, I suppose I’d better go.’

Lottie took a deep breath. ‘It’s my mum.’

‘What? Oh.’

The clanking of chain-link shoulder straps told Lottie her mother was rummaging through her favourite Chanel bag. Through the door, Kay shouted, ‘This is crazy, I know I have the key in here somewhere . . . Why can’t I find it? Ah, here it is, at last.’

In a panic, Lottie grabbed hold of Max’s arm and pushed him in the direction of her bedroom. ‘She’ll go berserk if she finds you in here. You have to hide. I’ll do my best to get rid of her, but .
