“So what are your thoughts on Doctor Levi? The new postdoc in the cell lab?”

“Eh, I could take him or leave him.”

“But he’s gorgeous!” Mia crooned, stealing one of Rachael’s chips as she did so. “Those lovely brown eyes, ink-black hair, pale skin...”

“That’s way too close to Liz’s ex for her to like him,” Chloë said. “What was his name? Elliot?”

“Eli,” I said, nodding. Chloë had come in much earlier than she usually did in order to join me, Mia and Rachael for a midweek chippie delivered straight to the communal area of our research building. Mia and Rachael had run over from their lab specifically for it; like hell was Chloë missing a gossip session with our old undergrad-turned-PhD girl group for a few extra hours in bed.

Rachael scanned her eyes across the atrium. The stairs leading up to the floors above us were all visible, as were the glass walkways that joined different parts of the building together. All in all we were positioned perfectly to people-watch.

Currently we were playing Rachael and Mia’s favourite game: spot the hot researchers. Back in our undergrad days it had specifically been ‘spot the hot lecturers’ until we ourselves became researchers and met a score of new faces within the Institute.

“How about him?” Rachael suggested, locking eyes on a target crossing the third floor walkway. “Works in the Human Molecular Genetics lab. Professor – Professor – ugh, what’s his name again?”

“Lionel,” I said, glancing at the man before returning my attention to my half-finished lunch. I’d ordered far too much food but I felt bad about throwing it out so it remained in front of me, steadily growing cold.

“Professor Lionel’s wife is really hot,” Chloë added. “Total blonde bombshell. My type if ever there was one.”

“Don’t let your brunette girlfriend hear you say that.”

“Oh, she knows. I have a poster of Margot Robbie up in our bedroom. Turns out that’s Harriet’s type, too. Makes it fun to watch films together because we love the same people in them!”

“That’s some flawless logic,” Mia said. “What about you, Liz? Who in the Institute do you find hot?”

All three women stared at me with laser-focus. Like hell was I saying who they wanted me to say, even if it was clear they’d all been gossiping about me and Tom behind my back. I couldn’t blame them, if I was honest. If the situation was reversed I’d absolutely be talking about it.

“Um, Evan Jackson, probably,” I ended up saying, which at least wasn’t a lie. I did find him hot.

It took Rachael, Mia and Chloë a few moments to chew this over. My best friend narrowed her eyes at me, deeply suspicious. “Wait, are you talking about Professor Evan Jackson, the head of undergrad molecular biology?”

“Yes, and?”

“He’s fifty years old!”

I merely shrugged. “I like what I like.”

Quick as a flash, from behind me, a hand darted for my phone – which was lying on the table by my right hand – and pulled it out of reach.
