CHAPTER 25

“How much farther should we go?”

The young Stormbringer looked to the sky. “I want to be back inside before the rain starts.”

“No kidding, but I don’t want to get back too soon, though.”

The young Stormbringer turned and looked right where McReady and Doreen were hiding. McReady tensed up and got ready. The two Stormbringer newcomers didn’t have guns, but they did have a radio. McReady was confident he could take them, but all one of them would have to do was open the channel or even yell and there would be more Stormbringers coming than he could hope to handle. Since noise wouldn’t matter, McReady slipped on his chainsaw gloves.

“Maybe we go up a little farther and then turn around?” one of the young Strombringers asked.

“Or maybe we just sit down and hang out awhile? It’s not like we’re going to find them. McReady is probably in the tunnels by now. If Krall really thought he was out here, she wouldn’t have sent us.”

“No shit, the last thing I want to do is take that dude on with just you as my backup.”

“I’m your backup? I figured you were mine.”

“Either way, I don’t want to take him on.”

McReady started to stand as he whispered to himself, “I guess you’re out of luck.”

Doreen put her hand on his shoulder. “Wait.”

McReady pushed her hand off his shoulder.

“They’re going to leave,” Doreen whispered.

“Not soon enough.”

“They’re practically kids.”

“Kids who would cook you on a spit if they got a chance.”

“You still don’t need to kill them.”

McReady knelt back down. He glanced around the tree they were hiding behind and saw that the two Stormbringers hadn’t noticed him standing up. He looked back to Doreen and pointed to the sky. “If we wait too long, we’re going to get caught in the storm.”

“I thought that was part of your plan.”

“If we have to go two hundred yards while it storms, we can do it. Two miles? No way. Have you ever been outside the dome during a storm?”

“No.”

“Visibility is shit. Even if we keep the hail from beating us to death, we have just as good a chance of walking back into the river as we do finding the tunnel entrance.”

“Can you just give them another minute?”

Before McReady could reply, one of the Stormbringers said, “Did you hear something?”

“No. What did you hear?”

“I’m not sure,” he said as he stepped forward and looked right at the tree McReady was behind. If the young Stormbringer looked up, he would see the freshly cut branch.

“Are you sure it wasn’t just the river? That waterfall is noisy as hell.”

The Stormbringer pointed to where Doreen and McReady were hiding. “It sounded like it came from over there.”

“What did it sound like again?”

“I don’t know, a voice I guess.”

“Could be you’re just hearing things.”

“I don’t know, I’m pretty sure I heard something.”

“Like that time back in Denver? When you wasted all our ammunition executing a rat?”

“It was a big rat.”

“Or how about when we were camping with that group
