Chapter 13

“You should have let me talk to her,” Gabriel insisted, sitting at the table and grabbing my Chemistry notebook.

I shrugged, getting Cokes out of the fridge. When Gabriel had come over for our tutoring session, he’d pecked my lips as if it was a habit. It had been very intimate and I liked that. “It’s alright. She thinks she is so smart, but I ended up negotiating something that was not really a pain.”

“What did you negotiate?” he asked, taking one of the Cokes from my hand, letting his fingers linger on mine.

“Help organize and register what is in the equipment room for next year's order. Told you, nothing major.”

“I can help you if you want.”

I snorted and sat down. “Believe me. I managed to negotiate a sweet deal. I will give her thirty minutes twice a week after the Christmas break.” I shook my head, taking a sip of my drink. “I don’t mind. Chago has French anyways.”

“Yeah…” He trailed off and I could see the muscles of his jaw bulge.

Was he jealous? I wanted to tell him the truth. There was no point in pretending anymore. “About Chago, I—”

He shook his head, turning the Chemistry book toward me. “No, it’s okay.”

“What I mean—”

“No, really, Lottie. I don’t want to hear it… please,” he pleaded.

Hearing him call me Lottie again took my breath away. “You know, only my father called me that.” I couldn’t keep the nostalgia out of my voice.

“Oh…” He looked down for a second, gently running his fingers over my knuckles. “You want me to stop?”

“No,” I replied and it surprised me. I liked it - him.

He smiled. “You are Lottie to me, not Charlie or Charlotte.”

I looked down at the book, not really reading anything. I was not used to all this, to the romance, to having all these feelings rushing to the surface.

“Do you want to know what my favorite movie is?” he asked out of the blue.

“I… Sure, I would love to.” I relaxed in the intimacy of the moment.

“It’s Billy Elliot,” he huffed as if it was a well-kept secret.

“Why is that?” I asked curiously. I loved Billy Elliot, but I would have never imagined it could be Gabriel’s favorite.

He shrugged dismissively. “How that kid goes against his family wishes. He fought for his passion and managed to do what he wanted.”

“Yes, a real role model.” And I knew why he envied Billy. His family had been bankers for generations. They expected him to choose finance and go to Dartmouth as they all had, but he didn’t want to. Deep down, he wanted to study architecture at Columbia. “Fight for what you feel is right deep in your bones.”

“I wish it was that easy,” he admitted, still stroking my hand gently, making my entire arm numb.

“Actually, it is, Briel. You just have to stand up for yourself, for what you believe in… for what you feel is right.”

Gabriel looked up and met my eyes silently. He stopped caressing my hand and took hold of it.
