Chapter Five

Felix Furthers My Latin Education

After leaving the hotel I used my time well. Because the hotel’s telegraph room was too crowded I had Alf take me to the nearest telegraph office. I sent telegrams to the general advising him of the situation at the hotel, the code word, and some suggestions. I also sent a telegram home to Archie with instructions for the night, to monitor Miss Lee and Mila Baudry, and to follow them if they left our building. He was to be on the alert for any strange men entering the building. It was conceivable that Miss Jane Lee was in danger. As an afterthought, I sent a telegram to Marianne with some domestic instructions.

I was halfway to the office when I recalled that both Archie and Marianne had planned on going to the music hall for the evening, and wouldn’t receive their telegrams immediately. I hoped a few hours wouldn’t make much difference.

I went past my office door and continued on to the Baudry’s lodgings with the aim of apprising Miss Jane Lee of the nature of her fiancé’s death -- that it was painless, and that the police were continuing their inquiries with a focus on a male suspect who had made his presence felt. There was no response to my knocking, and no light shone from beneath the door. I reasoned they might have retired for the night, and so returned to my own door. I wasn’t concerned because Evans would not have had time to connect Miss Lee to Baudry, and then find his address. Alf assured me we hadn’t been followed. So, to think Miss Lee was in imminent danger would be jumping at shadows.

Once settled in my own office, as I had intimated, I set about recording the details of the investigation to make up my official report to the general. It had started raining heavily as I left the telegraph office, and had not stopped since, heavy drops pelting the office windows as I wrote, as if the weather was punctuating my account. All in all I was very pleased with myself. I had prevented the kidnapping of an important scientist, and perhaps, again been of service to Her Majesty. I was not completely happy with the outcome, however. There was another act in this play. I was sure of it.

The day had tired me, and to make myself comfortable I had built up the fire, removed my pelisse, and unlaced my boots. I stretched out to soak up the warmth and relax. In the flickering firelight I let my thoughts turn carnal, and reviewed all the experiences I’d had over the last several days which marked my complete abandonment of propriety to passion. It was with heightened senses that I awaited Felix and what pleasure he would bestow on my eager body.

There was the sound of footsteps at the door, and the jostling of keys. My heart jumped, and I looked up from the fire with lusty expectation.

“Archie!” I moved quickly to reassemble my clothing.
