CHAPTER SIX
Earth, Sol System, 480 B.C.
THE KING OF PERSIA and all of its subject lands was a man on a mission. Xerxes had sworn on the tomb of his father, Darius, that the Greeks would pay dearly for their rebellion. He needed no servant whispering âRemember the Greeksâ in his ear as his father had. Those words were burned into his brain and deep within his heart.
He would never forget the Greeks, nor would they ever forget him. He would burn Greece to ash so that none would ever forget his wrath. None would ever forget the price of treachery. And none would ever dare speak the name of any Greek aloud until the end of all time.
He had amassed the greatest army, the finest navy that the world had ever seen before and would likely never see again. The Greeks would never know what hit them and his father would finally be avenged.
Gathering his war council together Xerxes reviewed once more even the most minute detail of the pending campaign. They all knew he demanded nothing less than the complete obliteration of the Greeks. A head adorned the tip of a flagpole outside. It had just the day before belonged to a general. The man had suggested showing the Greeks mercy.
âThe Greeks cannot withstand our forces, my King,â one of his Generals promised. âIf any of them have one ounce of wisdom in their head, they will meet us on their shores to seek terms.â
âThere will be no terms,â Xerxes barked. âNothing less than the complete subjugation of every man, woman and child on that accursed land will be accepted. Do I make myself clear?â
The cowed heads of the Generals all bobbed up and down quickly, lest they join their former colleague outside the palace. Xerxes was about to dismiss them when a strange swirling mist, glowing white light at the edges, began to form in the center of the room. All the men stared in shock as out of the expanding vortex walked a woman with red flowing hair and garbed in clothing theyâd never before seen.
Before anyone could sound an alarm, the woman withdrew two objects from her belt and swiftly pointed them at the Generals. Xerxes repeatedly heard a slight hissing sound. Each time the sound reached his ears, one of his Generals crumpled to the ground until finally only he and the woman remained standing.
âRelax, Xerxes,â Moran said, slipping the stunners back into her belt before withdrawing a much larger weapon. âTheyâll wake up in about an hour, with very bad headaches. But I wanted to have a word alone with you, away from ears that do not need to hear what I have to say to you.â
âAnd if I choose not to listen and have you killed instead?â Xerxes asked as he took a step toward the invader, who merely smiled and leveled the weapon at him.
âCareful my hotheaded King,â she cooed. âThis one you wake up from in the afterlife.â
Xerxes stopped in his tracks.
