Krystal

As Krystal rummaged through the old boxes from her childhood and younger years, she had a vision of the closets from her past. While she was growing up, the linen closet in her parents’ small house didn’t have a door. The shelves were disorganized, and crap was always spilling out onto the floor, forcing anyone passing through the hallway to step over the pile of junk. Eventually, her mom was sick of looking at the messy shelves, but not enough to purge its contents. When Krystal returned from school one day, she found an old bedsheet riddled with moth holes and unidentifiable stains tacked with pins above the door frame. She was forced to walk past the ratty sheet dozens of times a day. After her parents died, she’d spent weeks cleaning out the contents of the space in an effort to make it presentable for showing. She’d never forget the feeling she had as she approached the unsightly closet for the last time. She stretched her arms up and balled her hands into tight fists as she twisted the fabric. The laughter of some of the neighborhood kids echoed down the hallways of her memory. Why does your mom staple bedsheets to the wall? With all the fury and strength she could muster, she shut her eyes, ripping the fabric clear off the wall. Decades-old particles of paint and sheetrock rained down upon her head, catching in her hair. It was an exhilarating moment, which left her feeling empowered, vindicated, and emotionally depleted.

Krystal vowed her future closets would be pristine and orderly. The one from her first apartment was organized, but the door hadn’t closed properly because the track was all rusted out. One of the first things she did, before she even painted the place, was spend a chunk of her paycheck to replace the track for a proper door.

When she was working on the layout of the new house with Bruce, she made sure to include several closets to organize by theme: bath and hand towels, beach items, soap and toothpaste, bedding and pillows. It wasn’t until marrying Abe Axelrod that she discovered one large closet would be dedicated solely to storing suitcases. He loved to travel and surprised her with a full Louis Vuitton luggage set before their honeymoon so she could travel “in style.”

Krystal used the massive bag to bring some of her more delicate creations to Goldie’s, which was the safest way to transport them without risk of breakage. Delicately, she wrapped napkin rings, plant holders, and wind chimes in tissue paper and placed each item inside the bag. Next, she needed to get dressed and find any pair of shoes with less than a four-inch heel. There was a box tucked in the back of her walk-in containing
