“You probably bumped up against the spacebar or something,” said Anna, sitting at the computer with Stephanie standing and watching over her shoulder. “It’s happened to me a million times.”

“I’ve never seen it before.”

“Most people haven’t. I’m surprised you noticed it. They should probably make it bigger so you know when you accidentally inserted a stupid typo into someone’s study. Doctors hate that shit.”

“I don’t think I hit anything, but I guess it’s possible. You said you can check the last keystrokes?”

“Ah. See, that’s the great thing. If you know where to look, you can see the history of the entire document.”

“Really?”

Anna smiled. “Yep. Most people wouldn’t even know you could do that, but every change is stored right…Ta-da! Here!”

She turned to Stephanie while motioning at the screen. In front of her was a list of dates and times when changes were made.

“Anna, there hasn’t been a change to this document in close to a year.”

Anna looked back at the screen, and her face froze.

“Well, damn.”

“What does that mean?” Stephanie asked, her hands clutching the back of the chair.

“Um, it might not mean much. Maybe just fixing a typo or something. But, ultimately, what the red dot and this series of dates and times means is that at least one change was made to this document between when Doctor Giles signed it, and when you opened it.”

Stephanie’s mouth went dry, and she swallowed hard.

“Can we see what the changes were?”

“Um, yeah. Sure. We can just click on the last date and time to pull up the doc prior to that change.”

Stephanie sighed. “Do it.”

Anna clicked, and another window opened with the same cover page.

“Scroll to the end of the document,” Stephanie said. “The conclusion.”

Anna hit the “End” button on the keyboard, and the final page came up. Stephanie scanned the words, looking for changes.
