Chapter Fourteen

I felt a looming presence standing over me before Brody jumped and slammed his large body against mine.

“The fuck?” he barked.

Ouch. My eyes blinked open to find Tommy in his Spider-Man pajamas, and a worn copy of Ferdinand tucked beneath his arm. He reached for the book with his opposite hand and held it out to me. “Let-tee.”

“Hey, big boy.” I pushed myself up on my elbow and rubbed my face, pausing when I caught Brody gaping at him over my shoulder.

“Christ. Does he always do this?”

I chuckled and pulled Tommy into bed with us. “Aside from bedtime, this is his favorite time to read.”

Brody arranged him between us. “For a minute there, I thought you were going all Children of the Corn on us, little guy.”

Tommy offered Brody the book. “Brody, read?”

“Tiger, it’s the ass crack of dawn.”

I lifted my cellphone from the bedside stand. “It’s almost eight.”

“Like I said, ass crack of dawn.” He yawned when Tommy nestled against him. “Here’s the deal, buddy. Lety and I have this thing—”

“Let-tee?”

“That’s right. Me and Lety are a thing—hot, you know?”

Tommy grinned approvingly. “Let-tee.”

“So I’m probably going to start staying with her when she’s here.”

My stare widened. “You are?”

He winked. “Oh, yeah. I am.”

“Brody, I don’t know about this.”

He ignored me. “Since we’re so hot—”

“Hot?” Tommy scrunched his face, trying to understand. “Lety hot?”

“Dude. You don’t even know.”

“Brody!”

He frowned at me. “Do you mind? Me and the kid are having a heart-to-heart.” He returned his focus to Tommy. “Anyway, yeah. You’re going to have to start knocking. In case, you know, Lety’s so hot she simply has to take her clothes off.”

I nailed him in the head with a pillow. He laughed and tossed it to the other side of the bed. “Clothes off?” Tommy repeated. “When Lety hot.”

“See, he’s a man. He understands.”

I scrambled out of bed. “I don’t believe you, Brody.”

“Fine. I’ll have a lock installed just in case.” He adjusted the blanket around Tommy and started reading to him.

I rummaged through my bag for a fresh pair of scrubs. Brody frowned. “Where you going?”

“To see if your dad’s awake. If he’s up before eight-thirty, I usually get him ready before Roger shows.”

“Don’t you have a nine-thirty lab on Wednesday?”

I headed to the bathroom. “Yes. So I have to hustle.”

Tommy pointed to the picture. “Brody read?”

“One second, Tiger. Letz, do you always do this when you’re here?”

I rolled my shoulders, feeling stiff. “Read to Tommy? Yes. If he’s up earlier than this I usually set him up with a puzzle. It keeps him occupied. His speech and occupational therapists and tutors don’t arrive until ten.”

“I mean get up early, and see to everyone before you leave.”

I paused with my hand on the doorknob. “Of course, it’s my job.”

Tommy tapped his finger harder against the book when Brody continued to stare at me. “I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“It seems like hard work.”

I shrugged. “It is, but it’s fine.”

Tommy wriggled. “Brody, read, read.”

Brody analyzed me carefully. “You’ve always done this, haven’t you? Worked like this?”

“I’m second-generation Cuban.
