Loss of movement related to diminished testosterone represents yet another process in the aging cascade. When we stop moving because we are frail and we ache, other conditions result from our immobility. Our veins clog with blood and we get clots, bone marrow ceases to make blood cells that deliver oxygen, nerves and muscles stop communicating, and weakness increases. Our bones require muscles and movement to stay thick, and strong bones become osteoporotic with weak muscles. The immune system and immune globulins from the thymus stop production. This process signals the end of life, and poor movement multiplies the symptoms by discouraging further movement.
By this point I hope you are motivated to rethink aging and become older in a different fashion than your parents and grandparents did! Unlike them, you have higher stakes because you will be old for a longer period of time. Who among us wants to live in a nursing home or depend on our children when we could prevent this easily and effectively?
INSULIN RESISTANCE, TYPE 2 DIABETES, AND OBESITY
Andrea was 45 when she realized she had to make a change. She was fatigued, gaining weight, and unable to sleep. She went to her primary-care doctor, who told her she had prediabetes, and if she didn’t lose weight, pretty soon she’d have type 2 diabetes. But he didn’t tell her how to lose weight, and he wouldn’t give her medicine unless she had diabetes. Andrea was shocked. When her friend Beth told her about her hormone specialist, she decided she would see one, too. She was given replacement testosterone, but she was not menopausal yet so did not need estrogen. Andrea was also placed on Victoza and a diet and exercise program. Four months later her weight was down 20 pounds. She was exercising and feeling great! Andrea didn’t sit around and wait for the storm of diabetes to knock her down—she got help!
Type 2 diabetes, or diabetes that is associated with obesity, is fast becoming medicine’s number one enemy! The disease itself affects a third of Americans, and the majority of all medical research dollars are spent on strategies for treating and preventing it.
Diabetes is so important because it affects every cell in the body and leads to devastating medical consequences. It is Kathy’s belief that we must reverse the current trend toward diabetes instead of just accepting our fate. That, of course, is one of the themes of this book! We can still intervene during the stage known as prediabetes to prevent and avoid further development of this deadly illness. We need to learn to treat it in ways that allow us to avoid the inevitable diseases that follow.
Testosterone replacement is one of the keys to blocking the onset of diabetes or reversing its progression if it is already present. Doesn’t it make more sense to use one hormone to prevent dozens of symptoms and the debilitating diseases that follow rather than try to play catch-up?
