It took another ten minutes for Nyle and Mike to put away all the surveying equipment and fifteen more for the two of them to debate the best way of unrolling the heavy spool of cable. Uncle Jim finally emerged from the barn with a length of pipe and two grappling hooks. While all of us watched, he slid the pipe through the center of the cable spool and told Pete to lower the bucket on the front of the tractor. Then he hung the hooks from the bucket and looped them over the ends of the pipe, motioning to raise it off the ground. The heavy spool lifted easily, letting it spin freely.

Yanking on one end of the cable, he unspooled enough to get it started in the trench, then handed it to me. “I suggest ya start walkin’ toward the tower with that.”

Nyle and uncle Mike looked down at their shoes with embarrassed smiles as I took the cable from him and started jogging. In five minutes, the cable had been laid.
