Chapter Six

Miriam went to the fair. That day, she and her brother conducted several presentations with their aether formulas. They had several people make purchases. The day after, a larger crowd appeared due to there being additional vendors and presenters at the fair.

She and Yonas set up the formulas. Her brother finally let down his guard and was obliging enough to let people see the dirigible. All the while, Miriam thought about the empty box with Henry Master’s name on it, sitting at the facility back home. She still had unanswered questions.

“Miriam.” Her brother caught her attention when she was looking out in the crowd. She realized that a middle-aged gentleman had approached their booth. “This is Mr. Branson. He operates a uniform production factory in London. He’s interested in using one of the aether fuel formulas to power his machines.”

She pulled herself together. She couldn’t daydream. “Greetings, Mr. Branson. If you have any questions, my brother and I will be happy to answer them.”

He looked at the bottles on the table. “What can you tell me about these?”

“Let me start with the Level One Aether Formula...”

She spoke to him at length for the next ten minutes. Mr. Branson was very interested in the product and a sample. “If your formula is compatible with my machines, we can talk about an agreement to order the formula in large quantities.”

Miriam couldn’t be happier. This had the potential to be their first big contract of the fall season. “If you stop by our facility tomorrow, we can give you enough of the sample.”

Another man came up behind Mr. Branson. She realized it was Armand. He wore a hat and tinted lenses to block the sun. She thought he was going to say something to her. He lingered for a few seconds before turning to circle around the fairgrounds. Odd. He looked as though he were going to stop and make conversation. Perhaps something else caught his attention.

A while later, a woman approached. Miriam remembered Francisca from the restaurant.

“Miriam. There you are,” she said, looking at the formulas on display on the table. “What are these?”

“They’re different formulas that use aether. I’m working on some that can be used power machines. My brother and I are chemists.”

The younger woman was impressed. “Chemistry? I think I remember my father saying he studied it very briefly when he went to school. Is it difficult?”

“It can be, but I find the study fascinating and rewarding.”

“Naturally.” Francisca chuckled. “It is your work. What made you and your brother get started in the business?”

“It’s been in our family for years. We’ve been in Scarborough for a long time. Before then, my family practiced the science in Ethiopia.”

Francisca picked up one of the smaller bottles of formula and held it up to the sunlight. “I’m surprised I haven’t seen you at other events around town. There’ve been so many.”

Miriam straightened one of the flaps of the awning on the booth to keep the sun’s glare from the glass bottles. “My family and I visit town on occasion, but we keep to ourselves more often than not.
